Skills Development Programmes
PtSA, as the Development Quality Partner (DQP), has developed several SAQA-approved artisan qualifications, apprenticeship programmes, and part-time qualification programmes for the Tool, Die, Mould, and Special Machining industry in South Africa. These initiatives aim to ensure that trained artisans are readily available to meet industry demands.
For members, PtSA also offers short courses to improve the skill levels within its member companies, particularly focusing on new technologies.
PtSA TDM Powered Skills Development Programmes
PtSA TDM Powered Apprenticeship
The PtSA TDM Powered Apprenticeship is a competency-based programme aligned with industry standards, developed and managed by PtSA in collaboration with local and international partners.

PtSA Master Toolmaker Programme
The PtSA TDM Powered Master Toolmaker programme is a post apprenticeship competency-based programme aligned with industry standards, developed and managed by PtSA in collaboration with local and international partners.
The programme offer qualifications in five specialisation area:
- Metal Forming Master Toolmaker
- Plastics or Rubber or Glass Master Toolmaker
- Purpose Build Machine Master Toolmaker
- Specialised Tooling Machinist Master Toolmaker
- Casting and Die-Casting Mouldmaker Master Toolmaker

All Programmes include:
Programme
- Internationally recognised employable skills certifications (National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS) approved).
- Work Experience: On The Job Training with close supervision and interaction.
- Application of Tooling U-Learn: Versatile, competency -based learning and development solution.
- Soft Skill Development: The process of improving specific personality traits and abilities to develop effective working with colleagues and customers.
- Social Support: Qualified social workers provide guidance to address the needs of previously disadvantaged apprentices.
- Theoretical Training: Delivered at PtSA Centres of Excellence under TDM industry selected supervision.
- Practical Training: Simulated workshops at the fully equipped PtSA Centres of Excellence.
- Remedial Courses: Mathematics, Science, and English to help apprentices meet qualification requirements.
Minimum Entry Requirements
Required NQF Level Qualification with at least minimum marks indicated or equivalent in the following subjects:
Mathematics (35%), Physical Science (35%) and English (40%)
Training Facilities
Accredited training facilities in the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Gauteng, and KwaZulu-Natal serve as the base for these PtSA artisan training programmes.
