Enterprise Development: A Pathway to Global Competitiveness

At the heart of PtSA’s mission lies a commitment to building a more competitive, profitable, and globally connected local tooling industry. A key pillar in this effort is Enterprise Development – a structured and phased approach designed to rehabilitate and elevate South African tooling companies through targeted support and capacity building.

The Enterprise Development programme is more than an initiative, it’s a catalyst for meaningful transformation. By helping local businesses improve their competitiveness, marketability, and profitability, the programme sets them on a firm trajectory toward international relevance.

A Four-Phase Approach to Growth

The development journey unfolds across four key phases, each designed to unlock new opportunities for growth and operational excellence:

  1. Benchmarking
The starting point is understanding where a company stands. Using the WBA benchmarking process, PtSA assesses a company’s current position in the tooling industry. This phase not only identifies strengths and gaps but also supports the expansion of the local supplier base, particularly benefiting large corporates and OEMs seeking reliable partners.
  2. Intervention
Next, a tailored improvement plan is developed based on the benchmarking results. PtSA plays a hands-on role by facilitating access to funding for carefully selected productivity improvements. These interventions are designed to deliver a measurable impact for member companies.
  3. Technology Upgrading
Modernisation is crucial in a rapidly evolving manufacturing landscape. This phase focuses on evaluating technological advancements and aligning company capabilities with industry best practices. PtSA further supports members by helping them access funding streams for technology upgrades.
  4. Matchmaking
The final phase connects companies with the broader ecosystem. Through relationship building, online visibility, data sharing, and funding support, PtSA ensures companies have access to the tools, networks, and insights they need to thrive. Services include industry statistics, lobbying for sector support, and even contract facilitation.

Real Impact, Real Stories

Andrew White, Managing Director of S4 Integration, shared his experience after completing a PtSA Intervention Project:

“The project has helped us to focus on some of the important issues which will assist us to improve and grow the company’s competitiveness for the benefit of our customers and employees.”

His words are a testament to the tangible impact the programme has on member companies, driving internal growth that extends outward into the industry and economy at large.

PtSA’s Enterprise Development programme is not just about business improvement, it’s about transforming the industry. By investing in local capacity and aligning with global standards, PtSA continues to lead the way in strengthening South Africa’s tooling sector from the inside out.
