A New Chapter for PtSA: Centre of Excellence, Western Cape, Opens Its Doors

In the heart of Parow, Western Cape, a new story is unfolding, one that speaks to ambition, innovation, and the future of South Africa’s tooling industry. The Production Technologies Association of South Africa (PtSA) has officially moved into its brand-new Centre of Excellence, a space designed not just to house machines and classrooms, but to inspire the next generation of toolmakers and innovators.

From Beaconvale to Parow: A Journey of Growth

The journey began with the transfer of the Stellenbosch University Technology Centre (STC) to the governance of the INTSIMBI National Tooling Initiative. With PtSA now at the helm, their responsibility grew: advancing Research & Development, managing the Master Toolmaker Programme, and nurturing the skills that keep South Africa’s Tool, Die, and Mould (TDM) industry competitive on the global stage.

However, such growth requires space. The Beaconvale facilities, while once sufficient, could no longer contain this expanding vision. In December 2025, the INTSIMBI Board of Directors approved the purchase of a new home, an expansive 3,500-square-metre site on Fritz Spilhaus Avenue, Parow, perfectly positioned near key transport routes and industry partners.

Building for the Future

Architects Van Biljon Barnardo were tasked with transforming the site into a facility capable of meeting PtSA’s exacting standards. By December 2025, renovations were complete, and January 2026 saw the relocation of plant and equipment. With final touches scheduled for early February, the Centre will be fully operational by the third week of the month,a timeline that reflects the precision and discipline of the industry it serves.

More Than a Building: A Hub of Excellence

The new Centre of Excellence is more than just bricks and mortar, it is a living hub of innovation and training. The facility is designed to serve as:

  • Headquarters for PtSA’s Western Cape regional management.
  • A home for PtSA TDM Powered Apprenticeships.
  • A testing site for toolmaker trade certifications.
  • A centre for delivering short-duration courses for professional upskilling.
  • An advanced hub for Master Toolmaker training.
  • A collaborative space for R&D, where PtSA and universities work together to push the boundaries of South African tooling.

Voices of Pride and Responsibility

The move has sparked significant excitement within PtSA:

  • Tapiwa Samanga, PtSA Group CEO: “This is a major step forward for South African industry.”
  • Bob Williamson, PtSA Executive Director and President ISTMA World: “The facility can be regarded as a benchmark for the worldwide tooling industry.”
  • Angus Padua, PtSA Western Cape Regional Manager: “My team and I are humbled by the responsibility provided to us by the INTSIMBI and PtSA Boards. We will exercise those responsibilities in the best interest of the tooling industry we support.”

A Benchmark for the World

This Centre of Excellence is more than a local achievement, it is a global statement. By unifying research, training, and industry collaboration under one roof, PtSA is setting a standard for excellence that resonates far beyond South Africa’s borders.

The story of the Parow Centre is one of vision meeting opportunity, where industry leaders invest in the future to ensure the nation remains a global player in tooling innovation.
