The PtSA KZN TDM Powered Apprentices recently stepped beyond the classroom and into the world of advanced manufacturing during an educational excursion to Magnum Precision Tools.
Hosted by the Magnum Precision Tools team, the visit gave apprentices and their lecturers valuable insight into the technologies, processes and expertise they will encounter as they begin their careers in the Tool, Die & Mould (TDM) industry.
Seeing Advanced Manufacturing in Action
Throughout the day, students were introduced to advanced manufacturing technologies, including high-speed milling, a variety of machining techniques and the importance of selecting the correct tooling for different applications. Seeing these processes first-hand helped connect their classroom learning with real manufacturing environments.
Learning from Industry Experts
One of the highlights of the visit was the open and interactive nature of the sessions. Students were encouraged to ask questions, with Magnum’s experienced technical team sharing practical knowledge and real-world insights. These conversations gave apprentices a deeper understanding of manufacturing applications while reinforcing the value of precision, problem-solving and continuous learning.
A Memorable Experience
The hospitality shown by Magnum Precision Tools made the day even more memorable. Students enjoyed lunch together before receiving thoughtful goody bags containing useful tools and personalised items to support them on their learning journey.
To round off the visit, students took part in a friendly competition where they were challenged to estimate how long it had taken to manufacture a precision component. The apprentice with the closest answer walked away with a prize of drills and taps that will no doubt be put to good use as their career develops.

Experiences like these play an important role in preparing apprentices for the workplace by exposing them to the people, technologies and standards that define South Africa’s manufacturing sector.
